MEET JO KUFLIK
Love Island Cakes
DELICIOUS & BEAUTIFUL CELEBRATION CAKES
Jo Kuflik runs a boutique cake business in Kissonerga. It is called Love Island Cakes and has just celebrated its 10th birthday. We visited Kuflik to find out more about her background and what led her into making cakes for a living.
It was originally Kuflik’s mother, Jackie, who started the business back in 2009. Word got around that she used to make cakes in the UK and the demand became clear. ‘Making cakes’ is a bit of an understatement though; Jackie has an interesting background which incorporates gold medals, a position as the Chairman of Judges, writing books and designing cakes for the UK sugar industry, as well as a story of teaching in a Bakery and Sugarcraft College. This teaching experience has become the basis of ongoing training for members of the team and her extensive experience is what Love Island Cakes is founded on, and one reason for their huge success in Cyprus.
We later discovered that their story goes back even further.
Kuflik’s great grandfather was also a baker and her grandmother, a total whizz with the most difficult of pastry – filo – to create the family favourite, apple strudel. Speaking to Kufilk after knowing all of this, we are not surprised that she has a love and talent for baking!
With Cyprus positioned as the number one location for destination weddings in Europe, it is clear why their main focus is currently on wedding cakes. Kuflik receives orders from across the island for delicious and beautiful masterpiece cakes to satisfy the demands of discerning wedding couples getting married here.
The initial ‘Cake Consultation’ is a special treat as each client is presented with the opportunity to taste the wide spectrum of delicious cakes and fillings on offer. Whether you are planning a birthday party, wedding, christening or any other special occasion that requires a centrepiece cake, Love Island Cakes seems to have it all.
“The most satisfying part of my job is to receive feedback that a customer loved something we made especially for them. To hear that they love the look, taste and the service we provided, is very rewarding and it’s wonderful to know that we made their special day a bit more special”, says Jo Kuflik.
Five years ago, with Kuflik firmly at the helm of the business, they opened a shop. They filled it with new and upcycled furniture (also for sale) and by the end of the first month, were busy trying to find more furniture for their customers to sit on. Kuflik has always been a great shopper with excellent taste and has now expanded the business to offer so much more. Greeting cards (including some very naughty ones), candles, gifts and, for Christmas, more tempting items will be available including a big selection of board games, Christmas decorations and unusual gifts.
Sweet & Savoury!
It is here that you will find real doughnuts every day, fresh cream cakes on a Friday and perfectly French macarons.
Customers can drop by the shop on a daily basis for tea, coffee or soft drinks and choose from a selection of cakes including gluten-free and vegan choices. Now, there is even a hot cabinet with savoury pastries to suit vegans, vegetarians and any of us who enjoy a hot savoury treat.
Everything edible is made by hand, from scratch, by a dedicated team who are fanatical about taste and flavour! It is the attention to detail which brings customers back, time and time again to enjoy the new treats, as well as the ‘old favourites’. Fashions change with cakes as they do with clothes, so the team are always working on new, decorative techniques.
As the wedding season starts to draw to a close for another year, the team at Love Island Cakes are now preparing and planning for Christmas. They now offer a range of quality stationery, similar to the ranges supplied to John Lewis, Fenwicks and Paperchase in the UK. Pop in and see Jo and the fantastic team, enjoy a delicious cake and make the most out of her unique selection of quirky gifts and cards.
