MEET CHRISTOPHER KAFIZAS
Shadeports Plus Ltd
‘Pioneering and setting the standards for cable tensioned structures since 2002.’
In October 2019, the ‘Featured Business’ profile in Cyprus in Style Magazine was awarded to Shadeports Plus Ltd. We spoke to Christopher Kafizas about how he and his team became industry leaders. They have used over 49 tons of material and covered over 110,000 sq m of the island since their launch in 2002.
Kafizas was born in Zimbabwe in South Africa. His father, George, was born in Cyprus but lived most of his life in Zimbabwe. He was very successful in the rag trade there.
Kafizas worked in South Africa and America, with short stints in Australia and the UK before making the decision, with his father, to move to Paphos. It was following the economic collapse in Zimbabwe when Kafizas and his father joined forces and moved to Cyprus to start a business specialising in ‘quality shade solutions’ for residential and commercial properties. They launched from a small shop behind the General Hospital and now manage a team of 20 staff including qualified and trained architects and engineers. Shadeports Plus Ltd is a family run business and in 2009, Kafizas’ brother also joined the team as a Director.
They built their factory in 2011 and have just recently acquired a second factory next door. It is here from where the business is run and all products are manufactured here in Paphos. The first is now used for steel and woodwork, while the new factory is fabric-based and used for cutting, sewing and general maintenance.
Shadeports supply residential, commercial and corporate premises across the island with over 6,000 individual projects completed. They are the preferred shade suppliers for the United Nations and all British Bases in Cyprus, Amathus Hotel, Louis Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel and Kanika Group Hotels to name a few. They have also worked a lot with various government and private schools including The International School of Paphos and Heritage School.
“We are exclusive agents in Cyprus for our high-quality all-weather protection fabrics which are imported from South Africa, from the world’s leading colour shade and agricultural netting manufacturers. They export to over 65 countries worldwide including America, Australia and countries within Europe and UAE. This means our clients receive a 10-year guarantee linked directly to the fabric manufacturers and not just to a retail outlet where other shade businesses tend to buy from.” Kafizas said.
Kafizas uses Colourshade which is the most durable and colourful decorative shade netting available on the market. This contemporary all-climate protection is the best solution for industrial, commercial and domestic applications and comes in an exciting range of trendy fade-resistant colours. Colourshade is manufactured using Virgin High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) which offers the best UV stabilisers, quality refined pigments and high light-fastness properties, all of which provide excellent strength properties for the individual yarns in the shade netting.
Kafizas is a firm believer in maintaining close alliances with his partners in South Africa and also Australia. “Regular visits to both places keep us up-to-date and informed on all the latest technologies and developments” he stated.
As the premier supplier of sun/UV and hail protective canopies in the Cypriot market at present, the element of safety remains at the core of every design and installation process.
Kafizas takes pride in his ability to deliver bespoke shading solutions to suit the architectural design of any external space. Since 2004, his most popular selling product is the ‘architectural shade sail’. With the correct maintenance and aftercare service provided, Kafizas confirmed they have never had an issue with UV degradation in over 18 years. We look forward to learning more about their new, soon to be released, range of products and services – all in the realm of Outdoor Lifestyle.
