MY SECRET LIMASSOL
Professional Chef in Cyprus
Chris Tofarides is a cook and professional pastry chef, who has worked in markets and high-end restaurants in London. He is currently a project-based chef in Cyprus and, with his team, organises secret suppers across the Island. Their main focus is on responsibly-sourced local ingredients and seasonality. He lives in the centre of Limassol.
For a quick getaway outside of Limassol, I really enjoy spending time at Avdimou Beach. It is usually quiet and there is a good fish tavern, Melanda Beach where you can ask for ‘catch of the day’!
Locatelli at Amara Hotel has only recently opened, but does a great job reflecting the seasons in its menu. The quality is exceptional, with simple Mediterranean cooking at its best. You can also find a fantastic selection of wines there, to elevate your dining experience.
Best Place for a Coffee?
There are a few good coffee shops in Limassol and I try to visit them on rotation, to check what’s new in each shop! Nomad Coffee is close to where I live and has great coffee, and a great ambiance! That is my usual go-to place.
Best Place for a Cocktail?
There are always lots of bars popping up in Limassol, but the one that has been consistent in serving good drinks for ten years in a row, is the Library Bar. The guys behind the bar strive to give the best they can offer to their customers.
I don’t really have a favourite route but I must say walking along the beachfront road, from Limassol Zoo to Anexartisias Street, is exciting. There are lots of multicultural food shops and I often find many new ingredients to cook with. Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Arabic, and more!
Perfect Day Off?
Starting with a morning coffee on my balcony, followed by meeting with friends in the city centre, is what my days off usually look like. No excess here, just quite perfect.
Sagapo Children’s Foundation is a humanitarian organisation dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide, to reach their full potential through education. As part of Sagapo, we also support the ‘Free Hands’ social programme in Limassol, where they offer children, aged 12-17, a safe place to be looked after until their parents finish work.
It’s a tough decision since most of the wineries do an exceptional job in Cyprus nowadays. The family behind Vouni Panayias Winery in Paphos are the true reflection of the ultimate Cypriot hospitality. Their new series of Microvinifications is an outstanding example of ‘reflecting the terroir and local grape varieties in the wines’.
Masso Holistic Wellness is the perfect city spa! A great selection of treatments, in combination with top quality products and customer service, creates an all-round perfect spa experience.
Favourite Weekend Away?
The villages of Limassol discretely have a lot to offer! Vouni, Vassa, Omodos, Mandria, Pera Pedi, Platres or Foini! Small coffee shops and taverns, nature paths and walks. It has to be a good weekend when you visit one of these.
