5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING A NEW SOFA

Rules of Interior Design by Ampersand Cyprus shares the ‘Top 5 Rules for Choosing a New Sofa’. This information is invaluable for your final interior design scheme when furnishing or buying a new home in Cyprus.

Expert guidance on choosing a new sofa for your living room…

The sofa is the most crucial piece of furniture for any interior design scheme that will make the most significant difference to your home. Due to the size of this piece of furniture, it will always dominate the room. Therefore, the sumptuous sofas that you select to set the scene for the interior design of your living room, should always be of the highest quality and offer you the real comfort factor. Gone are the days of the three-piece-suite with a sofa and two chairs. Now, most interior designers in Cyprus will always recommend at least two sofas to accommodate your family and visitors.

Glen Young, who is the joint director and owner of one of the leading Interior Designers in Cyprus, Ampersand Interiors, with many years of interior design experience, says, “the sofas we select are critical for any interior design scheme we put together. If our clients have the space, we recommend a combination of two 3-seat or two 2-seat sofas for the living room. In most cases, a 2 and a 3-seat sofa will fit most spaces here in Cyprus, but if they do not have the room, they might opt for one couch and an occasional chair. We work with a company in the UK who are renowned in the furniture industry for the highest level of quality and design”.

Sourcing Sofa Fabrics from Designer’s Guild

Ampersand Interiors has worked for a number of years in combination with makers based in Nottingham in the UK, who use only the finest hardwood frames for settees made by a dedicated team of British craftsmen. They have a wide choice of colours to choose from and offer a patterned design collection from the prestigious Designer’s Guild, which is also available in a large selection of colours. As Glen states, “this way we can customise the sofa design to the living room using a fabric that can be coordinated with another fabric from the same collection for curtains and accessories”. We asked Glen to share with us his top five rules when it comes to choosing a sofa for your living room.

TOP 5 INTERIOR DESIGN RULES WHEN CHOOSING A NEW SOFA FOR YOUR LIVING ROOM:

SOFA RULE #1: NEUTRAL COLOURS

It is highly recommended that when choosing a new sofa, you go for a neutral colourway. This will enable you to change your interior colour scheme throughout the seasons using cushions and rugs. In the winter, you might like autumnal colours but in the summer, lighter and brighter colours. The accent colours can be matched with interior design accessories in the room such as candles and artificial or real flowers. A neutral colour also means that in the long term, you will not tire of it.

SOFA RULE #2: HIGHEST QUALITY

Make sure that that the sofa you are buying is of the highest quality. All Ampersand sofas are crafted with hardwood frames, and the cushions are made with a mixture of feather and foam. In the long term, this means that the sofa has been built to last.

SOFA RULE #3: DURABLE FABRIC

When you select your sofa fabric, make sure that it is designed for the purpose of covering a sofa. While we can all be seduced by sofa colours, designs and textures, you need to consider the fibre content. The type of weave will determine the long term durability of the sofa fabric.

SOFA RULE #4: ULTIMATE COMFORT

Comfort is paramount. The sofa is the centrepiece for entertaining, relaxing and watching TV. While looks of course, are essential, you will not want to keep an uncomfortable sofa for long. Take the time in the showroom to try the sofas out and make sure that you feel well supported. Some sofas can be too short on the seat, and some might not offer you the full back support you need.

SOFA RULE #5: SPACE PLAN

Make sure you take the time to measure your space. Always get the measurements of your desired couch and make a template for the empty room. You can do this with sheets of newspaper held together to give an idea as to whether the furniture will fit into the space. Maybe you are undecided if to go for one or two sofas. Always make a template and try it out on the floor. It will also give you an idea of any space left for other existing furniture you might want to include in the interior design scheme for your lounge.
