Luxury 5-Star Hotel in Cyprus
ONE OF the Leading Hotels IN the World
Anassa is an award-winning luxury 5-star hotel in Cyprus and a member of ‘Leading Hotels of the World’. A home away from home for A-list celebrities and Royalty over the years, Anassa certainly lives up to its reputation for being ‘The Jewel in Cyprus’ Crown’. It is the only Virtuoso hotel in Cyprus and also features a Spa, which ranks at ‘Number 18 in the World’. In 2018, the Anassa was featured on the Gold List of ‘Worldwide Best Resorts’ by Condé Nast Traveller Magazine and more recently in 2019, received a Condé Nast Traveller’s Reader’s Choice Award.
In 2011, the Tatler Travel Guide declared the Anassa to be one of the ‘101 Best Hotels in the World’ and in 2014, in the Geo Saison Awards, it received the accolade of being one of ‘Europe’s most Beautiful Hotels’ in the category of ‘Wellness Hotels’. Anassa translates from Greek to mean ‘Queen’ and alongside its international reputation for award-winning fine dining, this luxury 5-star hotel in Cyprus has also been described by the Evening Standard as, “part palace, part laid-back beach resort”. It is owned by the luxury hotel group Thanos Hotels and Resorts which also operate other leading hotels in Cyprus. In this interview, Cyprus in Style meets the man in charge of this luxury 5-star hotel, Sebastian Wurst.
Meet Sebastian Wurst – General Manager, Anassa
WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE RELOCATING TO CYPRUS?
I grew up in Germany but relocated to the US to follow my professional career within the hospitality industry. Today, I have been in the industry for over 30 years! Before coming to Cyprus and joining the Anassa, I managed the prestigious Hotel Plaza Athenee in New York. During my time there, I was privileged to meet several show business icons, including Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, and Harrison Ford. There were also many more as this is one of New York’s leading luxury hotels.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CYPRUS FROM NEW YORK?
Five years ago, I relocated to Neo Chorio to take up the position of General Manager at the Anassa Hotel. The village I live in is a beautiful village which is just above Takas Bay and very convenient for my work which involves long hours.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE PART OF ANASSA HOTEL?
Anassa is one of the most iconic Mediterranean hotels representing the true essence of Mediterranean living. Its fragrant gardens and an unparalleled location on the sea encourages a laid back but luxurious lifestyle enjoying the outdoors. We are also home to a multi-award winning spa where we promote Thalassotherapy, as well as wellbeing and relaxation. We achieve this by bringing unique beauty and wellness brands to Cyprus. There are almost too many positive elements for me to be able to choose just one! Our beach, our spa, our gardens are all tempting, but if I had to name one, it would be the main terrace of our Armonia Bar. The view of Takas Bay and the Akamas is breathtaking; it never ceases to amaze me.
TELL US ABOUT THE AWARD-WINNING RESTAURANTS AT ANASSA HOTEL.
Anassa offers four unique restaurants and weekly culinary events. Last year we were very honoured to have two of our restaurants at the hotel receive awards at the Toques d’Or Awards 2019 – Helios Restaurant and Basiliko Restaurant were honoured. We are the only hotel in Cyprus to make our own cheeses, bread, pastries, jams, and sauces. We always use seasonal produce and like to promote Cypriot specialties. We have a wide range of restaurants to appeal to all our guests and non-resident diners, from Basiliko Restaurant where Asian food meets Mediterranean delicacies to Pelago Restaurant where you can enjoy a poolside meze and fish. In total, we have four restaurants offering various gastronomic menus and two bars offering drinks for our guests during their stay with us.
WHICH PLACES DO YOU LIKE TO VISIT AWAY FROM THE HOTEL?
I have become an enormous Carnival fan after being introduced to it by a die-hard Limassolian, so this is now an annual ritual. I enjoy cocktails at Oniro by the Sea in Sea Caves, a fun night out at the Skinny Fox in Nicosia, or a winter weekend in Kalopanagiotis.
WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE AT ANASSA HOTEL?
There have been so many, but I will share two as not all of them I can talk about due to privacy reasons. One is not technically an event, but a family from the UK who frequently visits the resort named their daughter Anassa. The second was having Anna Vissi perform at a private event at the hotel which brought as much excitement to the staff as it did to our guests.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF CYPRIOT TOURISM?
In the long run, it will recover from the impact this year has had on the numbers visiting Cyprus. We are surprised at the number of guests enquiring to visit us this year due to the current situation. It serves as a wake-up call not to rely on limited markets, and we must bring awareness of Cyprus as a safe and diverse destination to different demographics.
WHAT MEASURES HAVE BEEN ACTIONED TO PROTECT STAFF & GUESTS AGAINST COVID-19?
Our guest’s and staff’s health are of the utmost importance to us. We are following all the health and safety regulations by the Cyprus government and added some extra steps without affecting the guest’s experience. We have thought of these measures to protect everyone during these times. The guest experience remains the same as they do not see the extra measures we are taking behind the scenes. So far, they have all been working out well. The guests are very appreciative and feel safe.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I enjoy my quiet time in the Polis area by going to the beaches or taking our dogs to the Akamas. If I need the ‘big city vibe’ we make a trip to Limassol or Nicosia.
WHAT IS YOUR ETHOS FOR THE FUTURE OF ANASSA?
We are staying true to our established reputation while continuously innovating and improving.
