ANTIQUE CLOCKS – A WISE INVESTMENT.

Antique clocks over the years have proved to be a wise investment as there are many people out there who collect clocks. They are not just a stylish addition to the home but also come with the practical aspect in that you can always tell the time! Also, many people find that the tick-tock noise of a real clock adds a certain relaxing element to the home.

Clocks have come in many guises over the years. They include Bracket Clocks, Cuckoo Clocks, Carriage Clocks, Grandfather Clocks and, the more traditional Wall Clocks. It wasn’t actually until the late 19th and early part of the last century that clocks became more accessible. It was during the 18th century that big wall clocks in public places such as train stations became more common. Over the years, clocks have also been seen to be a status symbol to show off your wealth. Your choice of a clockmaker, carpentry and decoration all reflected who you were in the old society of yesteryear.

ONLINE AUCTION THIS WEEKEND – SATURDAY 22ND AUGUST

In this week’s online auction at Castle Auctions, we are spoilt for choice with a selection of complete wall clocks for sale and several clock parts as well. Of particular mention is Lot 81, which is a solid wood wall clock believed to be from the 1950s. Today, to keep good time, the original mechanism has been replaced with a quartz movement. With an estimate of 60 – 100 euros, this would make a great addition to any hallway or kitchen requiring a touch of real antique style.

Lot 82 is believed to be a clock that would have been initially positioned in a post office, station, or a school. This antique wall clock has an ‘Alan Martin, Onley’ face with Roman numeral markers. It has a Junghans key-wound and pendulum movement in a solid wooden case with a brass bezel. The estimate on this lot is 180-250 euros.

Another clock (Lot 83) is an antique drop dial fusee wall clock with a ‘Ganthoney London’ face. This is a key-wound and pendulum fusee movement in a wooden case, which is usually highly sought-after by clock collectors. The guide price on this one is 280 – 350 euros.

Lot 84 offers a rare opportunity to bid on a collection of clock parts including pendulums, clock keys, hand tools, hands and a pulley. The guide price here is just 30 – 50 euros for a unique collection which could either be used for clock repairs or as a quirky design display piece.
