BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
A FUN RUN FOR EVERYONE.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when all around the world, people come together to support those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. In Paphos, the “Breast of Friends” group is benefitting from a fabulous event which has now become an annual tradition. It is now in its 3rd year. Sole Sisters, which is the ladies’ section of the Paphos Running Club, hold a fun run to raise funds for women with breast cancer. The money raised will go to the Cancer Patient Support Group.
SAVE THE DATE: 3RD OCTOBER – PAPHOS HARBOUR – START 4 PM
The route will start at the harbour and go along the coastline to the Elysium Hotel. Admission is 5 euros for an adult, 2 euros for children aged 10 -16 years of age and under 10’s are free. The registration will be open from 3 pm with the actual race starting at 4 pm. Sponsorship forms and further details are available by emailing Paphosbreastrun@gmail.com.
Sue Cordrey, President of Paphos Running Club, told us, “We started supporting Breast of Friends due to some of our members experiencing breast cancer. We wanted to come together and support a local charity that makes a difference for those going through it. We are delighted that in our first two years we have raised over 12,000 euros for the charity and we hope to raise a substantial amount this year. Everyone is very welcome to come along”.
Whilst it is known as a “run”, you can actually walk the course, so if anybody fancies taking part, do not think you have to be a marathon runner. The main aim is to have fun and raise funds to help others. We spoke to Allan Devereux, who is a member of the Paphos Running Club, to find out why he was taking part for a second year. He told us, “I firmly believe that this is a very worthwhile cause. The charity is for local people here in Cyprus, and sadly we all know someone with cancer. I like the idea of playing a small part in helping others whilst at the same time having fun with my friends”.
Asked if he had his outfit ready for the big day, he explained, “I certainly do. All participants are encouraged to wear pink, and I am going all out with my outfit this year. If I tell you that I will be wearing angel wings, a crown, pom poms, a tutu and a feather boa, you will get the picture. My outfit is the equivalent to being hit by a taser, but I don’t care, as it is for charity and I hope it will make people smile”.
Allan stressed, people are encouraged to come along and either sign up for the run/walk or enjoy it as a spectator. You can do the walk and then have a nice drink at the harbour and enjoy the view.
All charities have had a tough year in 2020 with the pandemic and have had to cancel many planned events. Marilyn McMillan, Chair of Breast of Friends, explained, “We are extremely grateful to the Paphos Running Club, and Sole Sisters in particular for all their efforts in fundraising. We have benefitted for several years from their generosity. They work extremely hard throughout the year to organise the ‘walk’, and they and their sponsors should be congratulated. Also, the people who take part in the walk, have my admiration, as do all the people who contribute to our worthy cause”.
Asked how they spend the raised funds, Marilyn told us, “This year we have purchased a special bed for the use of cancer patients, two oxygen concentrators, and several lymphedema sleeves. Many patients who have had their lymph nodes removed from their armpit, following breast cancer surgery, suffer from lymphedema, and these arm sleeves are invaluable. We try to support our patients by buying items which will aid and support them through their recovery”.
