CONTEMPORARY DESIGN & LUXURY LIVING
MEET EMILIA HADJICOSTI, LEADING INTERIOR DESIGNER IN NICOSIA
Leading Interior Designer in Nicosia – Emilia Hadjicosti is the director of Ambiance & Co, a leading interior design company in Nicosia. She established the business just over 20 years ago and today has a long list of discerning clienteles all over the world. Her mission is “to deliver the very best in style, quality and service”. At the forefront of her ethos is a passion for contemporary design and luxury living, always combined with, and adapted to, the client’s individual lifestyle. Emilia lives in Nicosia where she was born and raised. We were delighted to meet Emilia and find out more about her own lifestyle and sources of inspiration for interior architectural design.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOB?
Working in the interior architecture sector is always very creative and inspiring. We get to work on projects from scratch and bring them to life. New ideas emerge on a daily basis, and our networking circles consist of lots of interesting personalities, with stories to share and dreams to fulfil. Since we opened our doors, our primary purpose at Ambiance has remained unchanged. To present the best in terms of style, quality and service, and at the same time to share our passion for modern architectural design and luxury living with our customers. We have formed and maintained successful partnerships, with many leading designers abroad, and with modern brands which share the same ethos as us in providing the necessary elements to define a modern and quality lifestyle.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU?
A typical day starts with a healthy breakfast and a session of pilates. I believe that we should always take good care of ourselves. Thus, after my own personal start to the day, I zealously proceed to attend to the day’s events, which include meetings at the office with my team and at various sites around Cyprus. During these meetings, we examine how projects are progressing, communicate with existing and potential clients, and exchange lots of ideas for exciting action plans.
With this new reality we are now living in, some of these meetings currently take place online, and direct meetings are carried out following the advised measures and protocols. The safety of our staff and clients is our top priority and cannot be compromised.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR DESIGNS?
My love and passion for interior architecture stimulated me to study this particular field in Milan, Italy, at Istituto Superiore Architettura di Interni. I have always been attracted to the creation and configuration of spaces. From a young age, I remember designing buildings and houses and suggesting the placement of objects in spaces, feeling that they will enhance and beautify people’s homes. I am a strong believer that the architectural industry, in general, is very open and embraces each professional’s individuality. In particular, the fact that I was in the capital of fashion and design, Milan, clearly had a great influence on me, both personally and on the quality of my work.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROJECTS?
Each project that we handle is treated with the utmost of care and attention. Regardless of whether it is in the Cayman Islands, London or Athens, each project is individual and receives our dedicated commitment. Delivering exactly what the client requires, has contributed to our international rise and formidable reputation. It is a wonderful journey to work alongside the client. From a ‘white canvas’ to a project coming to life, and ready to be inhabited. Our biggest satisfaction is our client’s smile when they receive their finished work-in-progress.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
To continue to be passionate about contemporary design and luxury living, and to stay committed to detail, in sourcing products and services of excellent quality, for our respected and demanding clientele.
WITH THE ADVENT OF COVID-19, DO YOU SEE PEOPLE SPENDING MORE MONEY ON THEIR HOMES?
With people being forced to stay at home, we have indeed observed that they have paid more attention to their lifestyle conditions and felt the need for an upgrade or a revamp. Changing your space can bring a very positive change to your daily habits, and ultimately your own health and happiness. Our houses are our sanctuaries. It’s where we want to belong, to feel safe, entertained, relaxed and, of course, pampered.
WHAT KEY TRENDS SHOULD WE BE LOOKING OUT FOR IN 2021?
One trend that we have seen is the aspect of individuality, which will become more and more important. Uniqueness reflects individuality. People are designing their homes to reflect their personalities and creating spaces that tell their own story. Cooking at home and entrainment at home will still be big in 2021. We are seeing sophisticated BBQ units and benches for outdoors, beautifully designed and functional kitchens are still a favourite trend and, of course, natural materials with a luxurious spin, such as marble finishes in bathrooms and common areas.
ANY TIPS FOR THOSE OF US WORKING FROM A HOME OFFICE AT THIS TIME?
Try to create a space that stimulates and sparks your imagination. Adjust your working area environment into your own personal creative corner, which is bound to bring out the best in you! Choose the proper lighting that is smooth and sufficient. Bring nature to your working space by adding some plants. Dare to rearrange, and add some decorative items that are special to you. They may end up being your source of inspiration! What is important is to design this space exactly as you wish. This will ultimately enable you to maintain a work-life balance, so that you are work-productive and also self-caring to your own needs.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I enjoy listening to music, especially opera, cooking a lovely meal for my husband and dear friends, and sitting outdoors and observing nature. Nature is laced with simplicity and, taking into consideration our frantic lives, we need to pause, and enjoy these moments. A good book is always a good idea, to get absorbed in the story and unwind.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS FROM ITALY?
We have been associating for the past 20 years with some of Italy’s top designers and contemporary brand manufacturers. Italian design has always emphasised fine quality and remarkable craftsmanship. Whether it concerns textile art, natural materials, light features or furniture, these are timeless pieces of style. I cannot imagine any interior setting without an Italian influence, as it remains ageless in a spectrum of countless trends.
PERSONALLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCATION IN CYPRUS?
I would say Latchi near Paphos. It is the most beautiful scene, combining the freshness of the sea, the calmness of the hills, the hospitality of the people, and restful and uplifting vibes.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OVERSEAS DESTINATION?
It has to be Milan, since it’s considered by so many, and rightly so, as the centre of fashion and design. It is a great opera destination and has an impressive entertainment scene, with so many options for wining and dining.
WE UNDERSTAND YOU ENJOY WINE – DO YOU RECOMMEND ANY PARTICULAR WINERIES IN CYPRUS?
I am a fan of Sauvignon Blanc and admire the wonderful and refreshing selections by Zambartas wines, as well as Vlassides.
ANY HELPFUL ADVICE FOR THOSE IN BUSINESS AT THIS TIME WHO ARE FINDING IT DIFFICULT?
One piece of advice which I have always found to be helpful, is to remain authentic to your values and beliefs. These attributes make it possible for you to stand out and distinguish yourself from the rest, enabling you to reach higher personal levels without compromise. At the same time, you should never stop exploring and challenging yourself, in an effort to be inventive and move forward. We live in an ever-changing world, where trends and habits constantly develop, so we should always stay connected with our clients and search for ways to go the extra mile. We should also add value to what we do and do it with passion and enthusiasm. This never goes out of style!
