THE LOCATION

French Restaurant Limassol – This recently opened restaurant is housed in a very large and beautiful traditional Cypriot building on St Andrews Street in Old Limassol. There are two entrances – one to the Bistro and one to the Wine Bar. Upon walking in, you enter a little piece of France, combined with classical Cypriot architecture. Le Bordeaux is a Wine Bar and Bistro beyond dreams for any Francophiles amongst us. The building enjoys many architectural features, merging authentic Cypriot elements with modern interior design. The building also offers an array of multiple rooms for inside dining. These include two awe-inspiring areas which provide the perfect venue for private or corporate dining. My personal favourite was the superior room at the back called the ‘Petrus Lounge’, a unique and impressive dining space ideal for exclusive entertaining. On the hot summer night we elected to visit, we sat in the beautiful outside on the ‘Petrus Terrace’.

THE TEAM, HEAD CHEF & SOMMELIER

Le Bordeaux Wine Bar & Bistro has been several years in the planning by Christophe and Stephane Chaillou, a French father and son who live in Cyprus. Christophe is the founder of the very well-known Wine and More by French Depot boutiques. The concept for the restaurant was inspired by their experiences while travelling in south-western France and their respect for the region’s rich culinary heritage. They aim to offer the perfect pairing of wines with regionally-inspired flavours. They have taken the time to source some of the leading professionals in the Cypriot hospitality industry. The Head Chef, Philippos Constantinides, worked at the Four Seasons Hotel for over fifteen years. The charming Sommelier and Manager, Alexandros Tsalas, joined the team after previously holding the position of Head Sommelier at the luxury 5-star Anassa Hotel. As he explained, “Our main aim is for our guests to savour every bite, enjoy every sip and to take them on a memorable journey to south-west France”.

THE TAPAS MENU

There are two reasons you might want to visit to eat at Le Bordeaux. Firstly, it could be that you just want to meet friends to enjoy some wine with a sharing platter or Tapas. The other would be to enjoy a gastronomic meal than one would experience in a typical French bistro.

The Tapas Menu is undoubtedly unique and offers an exciting slant under the French influence. It is divided into both hot and cold options, and on the night we visited, we started our meal with a selection of both. They genuinely offered a taste sensation with unique flavour combinations, which we had never experienced before. Highly recommended from the menu is the Gorgonzola Arancinis, which was divine, with the strong cheese flavour coming to the fore and the Truffle Mortadella with Brie. Other options available include Pork Paté, Marinated Anchovies, Duck Foie Gras with Fig Marmalade, Garlic King Prawns cooked in Fresh Cream, and Patatas Mixtas served with a Garlic Aioli. The fact that the owner runs the largest chain of French wine and delicatessen shops in Cyprus certainly works in this restaurant’s favour. It gives access to some of France’s leading gourmet delights imported to Cyprus on an exclusive basis. The standard of the Tapas was outstanding! Also available to share with friends are the Cheese, Cold Cuts and Mixed Platters, priced from a very reasonable 16 euros for two people.

The full bistro menu will be active from mid-September and include entrées such as Fresh Oysters (imported from France), Beef Carpaccio, Pan – Seared Scallops, Pan-Seared Prawns, and Oven Baked Portobello Mushrooms Gratin, stuffed with Ricotta Pesto and French Soft Cheeses.

THE MAIN MENU

For the main course at Le Bordeaux, you are quite literally spoilt for choice. The main courses offered were divided into distinct sections, including Salads, Pasta, Meat, Poultry and Fish. Thankfully, with three on our table, we all chose different options to share.

The standout dish for all of us was the Beef Tenderloin Steak. We had requested a mushroom sauce to accompany this, and it was incredible. The meat was certainly of the highest possible quality. No surprise, it was Black Angus. We also enjoyed the pan-seared Salmon Fillet, which had been marinated in fresh herbs and topped with a white wine sauce. The final main course, which was a delight, was the Grilled Prawns. Again, they were different to the norm as they were served with a zingy lemon butter sauce.

To finish, we shared a Lemon Tart and the Le Bordeaux Chocolate Éclair, both rich and delicious. There is a nice variety of other French patisserie options to conclude the meal and enjoy with a dessert wine.

THE WINE LIST

It would be unfair to describe the wine list at Le Bordeaux as just a wine list! Every restaurant has one of those. At Le Bordeaux, they have possibly the most extensive wine list in Cyprus. A Wine Bible would be more appropriate, as when it is finalised, there will be over 1,000 labels available. This list has been carefully curated by Christophe, Alex and their professional wine team. Many of their wines are exclusive. Of particular note to mention is the fact that you have the option to enjoy over 60 wines by the glass. Whilst we all enjoy a bottle of wine, it is nice to have the opportunity to try a variety and to match it to the menu. Alex, the professional Sommelier, is on hand to offer his expert advice, which I took full advantage of when selecting a dessert wine. His suggestion of a glass of the outstanding Ben Ryé Donnafugata gave me one of the best wine experiences of my life. One that I would never have been able to enjoy if it had not been available by the glass. This wine from Italy is well worth experiencing. I will definitely buy a bottle of this exceptional wine for a future special occasion!

I will certainly be returning to this restaurant soon. Whilst there are many other options on the menu, I would actually select the same outstandingly enjoyable menu. The skill of the chef, combined with the very finest of French wines and fresh ingredients, made it a truly exceptional dining experience.
