THE BEST ADVICE & TESTS FOR YOUR UROLOGICAL HEALTH

DR ANGELOS ECONOMIDES MD, FEBU DGU – Urological Surgeon & Andrologist

Best Urologists in Cyprus – We took the opportunity to speak with Dr Angelos Economides about Urology and find out his best general advice relating to urological health for both men and women. He also explains which essential check-ups are available on GESY and how often we should have them.

After spending fourteen years overseas, Dr Angelos returned to Cyprus in 2021, studying and working in medicine. He is both a Urological Surgeon and Andrologist. After completing his initial medical training in Prague, he relocated to Germany, specialising in Urology. He worked with some of the leaders in this specialist field. He worked for seven years at the St Marien Hospital KKRN in Marl, which has a specialised urological department. He operated using the latest equipment and innovative practices, treating diseases that affect the prostate gland, bladder, kidneys and testicles. Now, he works as part of the Urology Department at the Blue Cross Hospital in Paphos. He offers the full range of diagnostics and treatment of urological diseases, using all the latest techniques.

WHY DID YOU SPECIALISE IN UROLOGY?

From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to become a doctor. I had always had a fascination with surgery, so this was a natural progression for me. In addition, the subject offers a broad range of surgical procedures in a narrow field of organs and thus allows me to specialise.

WHY DID YOU RETURN TO CYPRUS?

It was always the long-term plan for me to come back to Cyprus. However, to reach my expertise in Urology, I had to go overseas to qualify and gain experience. By returning to the Island and joining the Urology department at the Blue Cross Hospital in Paphos, I have brought new technologies and approaches to urological procedures in Cyprus. I have always thought that if you are indeed a good doctor, you should try to share your skills and education to help others, and in a small country like ours, it is vital to bring the expertise of more updated and more advanced countries to help our people. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to bring the latest technology and operations, which had previously been unavailable, or very complicated to access, to the people of Cyprus. For example, Percutaneous Neophrolithotripsy, a procedure used to remove large stones from the kidney, is now available in Paphos. We are delighted to treat people from across the Island.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE NEW MEDICAL EQUIPMENT.

We have a dedicated Urological theatre at Blue Cross, where we perform our operations. It is a state-of-the-art facility with a Urological Fluoroscopy Table, which is the only one in Cyprus. With my colleague, we are the two urological surgeons who work here. We have a Turis machine, an electrosurgical unit for treating prostate problems for patients on anticoagulation therapy that they cannot stop taking. The procedure causes minimal bleeding.  Our principal is to make all our procedures as non-invasive as possible by offering, for example, an Extracorporeal Lithotripsy, a shock wave technique used to remove stones in the kidney and ureter, so that our patients do not need surgery. That is why we have two extracorporeal lithotripter machines. In addition, we provide all kinds of Ureteral endoscopy with high definition semirigid and flexible Ureteroscopes. Moreover, we are equipped with 2 Holmium Laser machines for treating both Prostate and renal stones.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO UROLOGY?

It is important to remember that around 10% of the population have stones. Lifestyle choices rarely cause these. People can be prone to them, but it can be affected by hydration levels as well. So, people should always drink plenty of water to maintain their hydration and flush the system.

ALL MEN & WOMEN 35 PLUS

It is highly recommended for anyone aged 35 plus to have an annual kidney check with an ultrasound scan. This will look at the whole kidney and give us an early warning of any stones. It will also give us any early warning signs of kidney disease. If there are stones, and they are small, they can be simply removed and will not cause complications for the patient. This annual check-up is available on GESY, and patients need a referral from their GP.

MEN 50 PLUS

All men aged 50 and above are allowed, on GESY, an annual prostate check-up. This will include a complete prostate examination to check for Prostate Cancer and benign prostate enlargement. Also, for people with high-risk factors and a family history of Urinary bladder cancer, a Urine test for blood in the urine is an essential tool in Urology and should be performed.

YOUNG MEN BETWEEN 15 – 28 YEARS – SELF TEST

I would very much like to get this message across to the young men in Cyprus. They must check themselves for testicular cancer. They should do this twice a year. If they should find a lump, it is essential to see a doctor and get it checked. Being embarrassed, or leaving it to chance, will only delay necessary treatment.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

Whenever I offer a treatment plan to my patients, it is very rewarding. On a day-to-day basis, I relish meeting my patients and working together on their treatment. Seeing a patient go through their diagnosis to their full recovery is always what we aim for, and this is very satisfying for both myself and my team. I have always most enjoyed the surgical side of my job. Being able to offer the latest technologies and techniques which exist today in urology to patients in Cyprus, gives me a great feeling of pleasure. Today, 80% of my operations are non-invasive for the patients, and we are delighted to offer these solutions to their urological health problems.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

To continue building on our reputation as a centre of excellence for urological health. Together with my colleagues here in our urological department and the colleagues at the new Dialysis Centre, which opened last year, we now have the staff and equipment to treat all patients from across Cyprus.

Two of the most recommended hospitals in Paphos, St. George and Blue Cross Hospitals, are continually striving to improve their medical services with over 80 doctors and over 100 healthcare professionals working across both hospitals. Medical Specialists are based at the two sites to cover all areas of medicine. With their combined experience, expertise, resources, and state-of-the-art medical equipment, they offer the highest standard of medical care in Paphos.
