BOARDING HOUSE CYPRUS

‘A SAFE HOME AWAY FROM HOME’

THE LEADING BOARDING HOUSE IN CYPRUS

Boarding House Cyprus When we think of a traditional boarding school, the image of a rambling historical building with large dormitories comes to mind. Due to Harry Potter, we inevitably think of the Hogwarts School. However, the Boarding House at The International School in Paphos is precisely the opposite. Think more of a luxury villa with a central common room for all the students. The main aim here is to create a home experience away from home. As Head of School, Dr Litsa Olympiou explained, “Our primary ethos for the boarding house is to create a safe and homely environment for our pupils whilst they stay with us”.

The Boarding House, which opened in September 2019, was purpose-built. The beautiful modern building was designed by one of Cyprus’ leading architects, Andreas Vardas, who incorporated the latest technology. It is positioned on the campus of The International School and can provide accommodation for up to seventy pupils, ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old. Within the building, the girls’ and boys’ bedrooms are divided on separate floors. The design is centred around a huge common room for all the pupils to come together, socialise and enjoy the facilities. Despite the fact that Cyprus is one of the safest countries in the world, a high-security camera system protects the whole building and grounds.

BOARDING SCHOOL FACILITIES IN CYPRUS

The building has lovely gardens with orange, lemon and olive trees, which offer the ideal location for al fresco dining for a barbecue dinner or a home-cooked pizza night. All the bedrooms offer en-suite facilities, and students can either have a room to themselves or share with up to two others. They also have direct access to all the campus sporting facilities, including an indoor swimming-pool, indoor sports hall, football pitch, basketball and tennis courts.

If the boarders are there at the weekend, the school offers opportunities for many activities, including water sports, water park visits, cultural visits in Cyprus, shopping trips and excursions to local restaurants.

PUPILS’ WELL-BEING

When it comes to children’s general well-being, the school has tried to think of everything possible to support a child whilst they are away from their home and family. They have a dedicated and very experienced boarding house staff, who act as House Parents. They are available 24 hours a day to offer support and general guidance. The school also has an on-site nurse and counsellor, who are always on hand should the need arise. They also work with leading medical professionals who are minutes away in Paphos, and who offer the highest level of medical care.

HEALTHY & NUTRITIOUS DIET

Another vital element, for any pupil staying at the Boarding House, is a nutritious diet. An in-house catering service supplies all the high-quality meals for the pupils, and the main emphasis is on healthy options using fresh local ingredients. In addition, the school plays a role in developing good eating practices from an early age.

THE RIGHT BALANCE

Much thought and development have been put into the daily schedule for all the boarders at the school. Whilst educational results are significant, the main aim is to create the perfect balance between academic work and enjoyment of life. As Dr Olympiou explained, “We strive to help students establish a healthy balance that our pupils can sustain in the future”.

BOARDING SCHOOL OPTIONS:

At the Boarding School, there are three varieties of boarding options, designed to work with parental commitments and geographical home location.

  • FULL-TIME BOARDER

The first is a full-time option, which starts at the beginning of the academic year. A pupil can stay for the three terms at the school, and, if needed, this can include half-term breaks.

  • WEEKLY BOARDER

This is designed for a pupil whose family may live in Cyprus. For example, a weekly boarder would arrive at the school on a Sunday by 8 pm and stay until 5 pm on Friday. They would then return home for the weekends. Weekly boarders can stay for the weekend, if required, at an extra charge. Upon request, weekly boarders can stay over Christmas and Easter holidays.

  • FLEXI-BOARDER

This is an option which is available to all pupils at The International School. It can be either for a short or an extended period.  The flexi-boarding option is suitable for parents who travel a lot for business, for emergency circumstances or last-minute trips.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The International School of Paphos was founded in 1987 as a co-educational day and boarding school, located in the town centre. The school gradually developed throughout the late 1980s and ‘90s, experiencing rapid growth at the turn of the 21st Century. Today, it is a co-educational day and boarding school situated on a purpose-built, state-of-the-art campus in Anavargos Village, on the outskirts of Paphos.
